Allegra is 12 years old when she is sent to the Convent of Daughters of the Cross. Here she struggles with darkness and despair, the emotional cruelty of the nuns and rituals of power that consume her. She exists in a sensual-spiritual world that evokes complex rituals and cultish practices. But she begins to connect with it on a social level when she makes friends and finds herself involved in their oppressive systems of belief.
As time passes and she grows older she begins to see how it all works. The way the nuns forbid passionate friendships and displays of excessive behaviour. She becomes aware of a certain disenchantment among the older girls as they reach for power in this pseudo-realistic world. Allegra finds herself immersed in spiritual excess the only way she can submit to this harsh dictatorial environment. She finally accepts her destiny as she is clever and resourceful and is able to tell her story as the ethos of belief becomes clear to her.
About Hannah Carrow
I am a fine art graduate from St Martins School of Art. I was brought up in Cornwall, but now I live and work in London. I have only recently returned to writing having won the senior essay prize for Cornwall and had some short stories published in my teenage years. I was recently selected to complete a Curtis Brown 6 month online novel writing course which has helped me tremendously with my writing. My inspiration comes from my life experiences which are diverse and sometimes harrowing. But it is that which drives me. I am passionate about literature and am always reading as it is this that informs my own desire to write. I try to write every day but very often I become disillusioned with my work because writing is so subjective. But mostly I am happy just to be putting words down on a page, it is part of me and I will always be fulfilled by its promise and its hardship and its inspiration.
