Twenty-four-year old Emma is awoken by a panicked phone call from her friend Cecy, who is leaving her husband. Cecy then abandons her horse in a trailer outside Emma’s London flat and goes out of phone contact.
Emma, uncertain what to do, takes advice from a stranger in the street and on her advice drives the horse to a rural estate, Cummerbund Manor, which, she is told, has a suitable set of stables.
A family with a large house must be in need of a horse.
Instead, she finds a dead body in an outhouse: Cecy’s husband, Leicester.
The owners of Cummerbund Manor call the police, who, already confused by Emma’s unlikely story, then find blood on the trailer floor: Leicester’s blood.
And Cecy has completely disappeared.
Arrested for murder, Emma's only hope is an unlikely pair: the sharp twelve-year-old daughter of the Cummerbund house, Mon, and Miranda from the SeeMs Detective Agency. Together they must unravel a web of family secrets before it is too late.
About Gina Cheyne
This is Gina Cheyne’s eighth novel in the SeeMs Detective series, (the agency that looks behind what SeeMs to be true). It centres around a horse which appears from nowhere and needs a home.
As a child Gina was mad on horses and rode whenever she could. Horses gave Gina's parents the chance to avoid travelling and hence the family never went further than Jersey. As a result Gina became travel-addicted and spent the year after university bumming around SE Asia, China and Australia, where she worked in a racing stables in Pinjarra, South of Perth.
Things were not always straightforward and she managed to get the UTE stuck in the sand while feeding the horses, her rescue came in the form of a tractor, which subsequently also got stuck. The boss was not happy!
No longer a rider, Gina has turned her passion to writing about crime and, in this case, the odd story of the horse who arrived in the night!
