I know you to be her, and her to be you, wrote the dying Kit Lansbury to his granddaughter.

2006. This enigmatic line and the inheritance of The Gatehouse in Kent offer Claire the chance to escape a disastrous love affair and doubts about her degree at Oxford. Hidden away in The Gatehouse library are letters and journals that have been gathering dust for over a century. Unlocking their revelations will take her on a journey from Ypres to the lost grandeur of Berlin. As Claire begins to understand the price of love, she too has to face its consequences.

1913. Clara is a firebrand Suffragette, a trailblazer, willing to risk prison and hunger strike. Yet, as a committed pacifist she does the unthinkable and falls in love with a soldier. Her journey will take her to the killing fields of Flanders as a volunteer nurse in a converted nunnery, into a war that will change her irrevocably. Like Claire, all roads lead to Berlin, but for Clara, a Berlin torn by revolution and civil war.

About Robert M. Kidd

Twenty years ago I attended the ninetieth anniversary of the battle of the Somme. After the main events at Thiepval I spent a week visiting battle sites and memorials of the Great War from the Menin Gate to Loos and Mons. It made a profound impression on me. A few years later a dear friend asked me to piece together what had happened to his Great Uncle on that fateful July morning in 1916. Armed with an album of faded photographs, a few creased letters and a great deal of research, I was able to tell the story of his long-lost uncle.

By then I was writing about a far more ancient history in my Histories of Sphax series, nevertheless the memories of my 2006 visit still haunted me and would not let go. What started out as a journal became a series of articles, and eventually, years later, a novel. And what started out as recollections of men at war became a story about women, and how war touches the lives of all of us as it ripples down through the generations.
